   COUNTRY CARPENTERS

Spring always seems like a time to slow down and reflect on life. However, to our forefathers it was just another season; work never stopped and retirement wasn’t an option. They didn’t consider their work a burden because they loved their work. I’ve heard it said that working lengthens your life.

I was reading Eric Sloane’s book “Once Upon A Time”, and he told of a school cornerstone that read, “Life’s Enjoyment Is Life’s Employment”. That statement seems to be foreign in today’s world. 200 years ago hard work was thought of as pleasurable . Using your own two hands to fashion something from nothing gives one a great sense of accomplishment, it feeds one’s soul.

Roy Underhill once talked of a man named Otto Salomon who wrote a book called “The  Handbook of Sloyd”. In this book Salomon taught a system of learning that not only exercised your mind but also your senses. A quote from this book reads “Sloyd has for its aims, as a means of formal instruction - to instill a love for work in general; to create a respect for rough, honest bodily labor; to develop self-reliance and independence; to train to habits of order, exactness, cleanliness, and neatness; to teach habits of attention, industry, and perseverance: to promote the development of physical powers; to train the eye to the sense of form, and to cultivate the dexterity of the hand.” This seems to be missing in today’s generation.

We would do well to glean some wisdom from these words. The ethic found in these words and also in our forefathers are part of Country Carpenters’ DNA. Each part of our pre-cut cabin, barn and carriage shed kits are handled and fashioned by our team of craftsmen right here in our workshop in Hebron, CT.  You don’t have to step back in time to experience that type of craftsmanship, you can see it today. Visit the video section of our bwebsite to watch our craftsmen at work, we know you will be glad you did!
