Long Twilight
by Sara Drought Nebel
Not yet sunset
orange fireball still suspended
well above the horizon
-a clear day-
near the solstice.
Shadows stretch across
beach, marsh and grasslands
as they begin their climb
up the distant trees
muddy olive dipped in fluorescent orange light.
Cobalt colored sea
under white beach houses on dunes
lit up with yellow mirror windows
reflecting a stubborn sun.
Behind them twilight slowly rises in the
eastern sky
-the nightrise-
I hear crickets, see bats flutter above
then the fireflies light the dark trees
silhouetted
against a sparkling starry
sapphire sky, still
deep jewel blue...
-the longest twilight-
