ORIGINAL 18th AND 19th CENTURY WIDEPLANK FLOORS
Tom Campbell |
The Old Wood Workshop LLC in Pomfret was started in 1991 by Tom Campbell. This didn’t happen at once but was a natural development of Campbell’s interest—you could say passion—for ancient wood and his specific expertise in old flooring.
In 1989, Tom, who grew up in Eastford, graduated from pharmacy school and worked as a pharmacist for twenty years. As a hobby, he crafted furniture from chestnut wood. He became a chemistry and biology teacher and taught high school for four years. Gradually his interest in fine wood got to the point where it became a full time career. |
|
Since 1991, Old Wood Workshop LLC has developed a reputation across the USA and around the world as a category leader in antique floors, specializing in reclaimed antique wall board and other salvaged wood. They do not re-saw or re-mill material but instead look for 150 to 300-year-old flooring that has never had its surface altered, other than being walked on. They have a unique selection of architectural antiques, such as antique iron hardware and salvaged stone. They provide quality reclaimed wood for homeowners, as well as building contractors, designers, and architects. They supply small-batch stock for cabinetmakers or other woodworking products, including music instruments. |
|
What Tom looks for is the rich color or patina of an antique floor which took nature hundreds of years to create. He also looks for the rustic variations of color, such as the beautiful shades of honey and amber in Pumpkin Pine Flooring (aka Easter White Pine), the texture and contour of the wide plank surface due to foot wear or saw marks, and the taper of the board from end to end. All of these nuances add up to a unique and beautiful antique floor.
