IT’S HAPPENING IN OLD NEW MILFORD
On a recent visit to New Milford, I enjoyed a walk around the old Green. The Historical Society Museum, which is right off the Green, happened to be closed. As luck would have it, Loretta Kretchko, a youngish member of the Board of Directors of the Historical Society who lives across from the museum, saw me trying the bell, kindly came over, and talked with me for fifteen minutes or so.

Loretta was excited, as the Historical Society was about to be awarded a prize from the New Milford Trust for Historic Preservation for the work they had done restoring the mid- 18thcentury Knapp House. She was visibly animated by the challenge ahead: the restoration of the mid-18th century Boardman family home and dry goods store that was moved next door to the Historical Museum. The Boardmans were one of the leading families in New Milford in colonial and Revolutionary times. Walking around town, sitting by the Green with the locals at Johanna’s Restaurant, you could pick up the vibe to keep the past alive.

The museum is furnished with a wealth of historical objects and 18th century works of art.
