THE BELL IN THE TOWER It was 1959 and I was in the fifth grade at McKinley School in Fairfield. We had a music teacher, Miss Sommers, tall and blonde, who came once a week and lead us in song from beat-up blue songbooks. The song we all looked forward to went: “High in the steeple hangs the bell, Old Father Simon rings it well. Ding-dong-ding! Went the bell in the tower, Ding-dong-ding! Went the bell every hour.” All our attention was riveted on our classmate, Linda Simon. She gloried in the song and we gloried with her. Her face glowed at the mention of Father Simon. And we were with her, every one of us. It didn’t matter that there was no actual connection between Linda Simon and Father Simon in the song. Something pure and other-worldly was at play, the memory of which would last forever. Max H. Peters Publisher and Editor |
