 FAERIE HOUSES AND STONEWALL STORIES
  by Sara Drought Nebel

Autumn is a magical time in New England.

At the Florence Griswold Museum in Old Lyme, CT, October brings The Wee Faerie Village outdoor exhibit ! Beneath the changing leaves of huge elder trees, along the Lieutenant River where the early colony of impressionist painters painted, and artists still paint today, artful faerie homes and creations are shown. Made of pine cones, acorns, sticks, leaves, wire, twine and found objects into miniature dwellings, tools, bowls, tables, chairs and ladders and stairs that lead us into this mystical, whimsical world of nature and faerie wonder.

Walking near my house along a half mile of an old stonewall, guarded by huge oaks and maples, I see these same remnants strewn there and imagine the faerie world. Using acorn caps for bowls and maple seed samaras become faerie wings. Leaves catching light in between old stones and green moss.....magical.

An old stone wall in the forest is so romantic and tells a story. In the afternoon or morning when the light is low and creatures are stirring. Enter the faerie world on any woodland trail or even a walk in the neighborhood and see where it takes you! Gather bark, acorn caps, shells, rocks and pine cones and make a faerie dwelling at the beach for others to enjoy!

-autumn dream-
on an old stone wall
near huge elder oaks and maples
                faerie stories and adventures
         abound!
dancing afternoon sunlight
warms red and brown curled leaves
     and soft green moss
   for resting samara faerie wings.
acorn caps and nut shells are bowls for berries
upon tables of fallen grey bark.
nature is the stage
and the faerie stories
            are about to begin....
