COUNTRY CARPENTERS HOSTS
“COLONIAL DAY” IN HEBRON SEPTEMBER 17th
Rob Soderberg working on a timber for a early Hebron home. |
Have you ever wondered what it be like to step back in time to over 200 years ago? Breathing the air, smelling the smells, touching the hand-made items and talking to the craftsmen who made them. Well, for one day in September you can. Hebron Colonial Day is a free event where folks can come out to see history in action. Our hope at Country Carpenters is to create a glimpse of Hebron over 200 years ago. Our town was home to farmers and craftsmen, hardworking people that lived a self-sustaining lifestyle.
Here in 2022, we are blessed with the opportunity of going to the local store to pick up just about anything we need. As you look back to our past, one could also say that our ancestors were blessed because they couldn’t go down to the local store to get whatever they needed. Those were the days of hand-made things, and these things were the result of their own efforts, giving a satisfaction rarely found in today’s busy world. The chair they sat in or the table they ate from, even the cloths on their back, had a signature of sorts given by the hands that fashioned them. We may not realize it but the things we put our hands to reflect a part of us that the next generation will see.

Home life in early Hebron. |
As you walk through the village you can visit the blacksmith shop, one room school, chair maker, wood carver, potter, tinsmith, a colonial home, timber framer, farmer, and local colonial militia of the day. |
Blacksmiths Fred Brehant and Fred Brehant Sr. |
We are dedicating this year’s event to one of the founders of Hebron colonial Day, Fred Brehant Sr. our village blacksmith, who passed away earlier this year at the age of 94. His son Freddy continues the tradition of blacksmithing. He is the 3rd generation to continue this family craft.
This year’s event will be on Saturday, September 17th from 10:00am to 4:00pm at Country Carpenters, 326 Gilead St. Hebron Ct. This is a free event so we hope you can come and join us.
In “Ecclesiastes” we are told, “Whatever your hands find to do, do it with all your might”. |
