CT WEE FAERIE HOUSE
by Sara Drought Nebel
Faerie vase and nutshell
As the winter Solstice passes and the earth begins to turn back to the sun(in our part of the world), it is such a wonderful time to be grateful for and celebrate light. |

Awareness
When awareness comes and words unfold
the ultimate story of life is told
perhaps not by words
but might
be found
in a fleeting
sliver of
light.

Slivers of light are especially beautiful in the morning sunrise and afternoon sunset.
We are gaining a minute of sunlight almost every day. The light as it falls on and moves over fallen oak leaves and acorn caps, nutshells, rocks and shells on the beach, is fleeting and tells the stories of faeries. Constructing and finding wee faerie houses and writing stories and poems about them has always been one of my favorite artforms. Imagining the wee folk inhabiting a shelter, and the adventures they have come “home” from. Seeing them having an acorn bowl of berries and a tiny nut or berry or flowery seasonal tea while telling their tales ignites my imagination. Dramatic and artful scenes that only I can see…. |

On stonewalls and beach alcoves, wooded trails and even under the apple or pine trees in my backyard, I can see the faerie dwellings ready-made or construct them from a few nearby natural objects. And I now have a growing collection of acorns, leaves, pine needles, seashells, rocks, tree bark, sticks, pieces of driftwood, nut shells, berries, tiny glass vases, bottles and even an antique tiny cast iron stove that I found (though I know faeries are known to not appreciate iron, so I keep this on my windowsill).
As I welcome back the light every day, on my walks, in my studio and in my poems and stories, my collection grows. I cherish the light one sliver at a time. One minute more per day. I enjoy the full moons, the constellations and meteors at night, and the morning and afternoon sun with the faeries. As I go outside my eyes and imagination are ready to find them!
